FAQ:
1. What is a Chain Sprocket?
A Chain Sprocket is a profiled wheel with teeth designed to mesh with the links of a roller chain, timing belt, or other perforated material. It is a critical power transmission component that converts rotational motion and torque between shafts via a chain drive system.
2. What types of sprockets do you manufacture?
We produce a comprehensive range for various standards and applications:
Roller Chain Sprockets: For ANSI (ASA) and ISO (DIN/BS) standard roller chains (e.g., Series 25, 35, 40, 50, 60, 80, 100, 120, 140, 160, 200).
Taper Lock (Taper Bush) Sprockets: Feature a removable tapered bushing for easy installation/removal and interchangeability without machining the shaft.
Finished Bore Sprockets: With a standard keyway and set screw holes for a fixed installation.
Double-Pitch Sprockets: For conveyor applications where slower speed and longer center distances are needed.
Idler Sprockets: For chain tensioning and guidance.
Single & Double Strand Sprockets: For single or double-width chains.
Custom & OEM Sprockets: For non-standard chains or special applications.
3. How do I specify the correct sprocket?
You need to know five key parameters:
Chain Type & Pitch: The standard chain number (e.g., ANSI 40, ISO 08B) determines the tooth profile and pitch (distance between roller centers).
Number of Teeth (N): Affects speed ratio and diameter.
Bore Size & Type: The shaft diameter and whether you need a plain bore, keyway, or Taper Lock bushing (specify bushing size, e.g., 1008, 1210).
Hub Configuration: Type A (flat), Type B (hub on one side), or Type C (hub on both sides).
Material & Finish.
4. What materials are your sprockets made from?
Material selection depends on application, load, and environment:
Carbon Steel (SS400, S45C): Most common, offering a great balance of strength, wear resistance, and cost. Often heat-treated (case hardened or through hardened).
Stainless Steel (304, 316): For corrosion resistance in food, chemical, marine, or washdown environments.
Cast Iron (GGG40/Ductile Iron): Good wear resistance and damping properties for some industrial applications.
Plastic/Nylon (MC Nylon, POM): Lightweight, quiet, and corrosion-proof for light loads, packaging, or clean environments.
5. How do I calculate the speed ratio between two sprockets?
The Speed Ratio equals the number of teeth on the driven (output) sprocket divided by the number of teeth on the driver (input) sprocket.
Formula: Ratio = N_driven / N_driver
Example: A 20-tooth driver and a 40-tooth driven sprocket give a 2:1 reduction ratio (output speed is half the input speed, output torque is double).
6. What is the importance of sprocket hardness and heat treatment?
Proper hardness is crucial for wear life.
Teeth Surface Hardness: Typically hardened to 40-55 HRC to resist wear from the chain rollers.
Process: Induction hardening or case carburizing is used for steel sprockets to create a hard wear surface while maintaining a tough core to prevent tooth breakage.
7. Are Taper Lock (Taper Bush) sprockets better than finished bore?
Each has advantages:
Taper Lock (Taper Bush):
Pros: No machining required, easy installation/removal, reusable bushings, perfect for adjusting position on the shaft, eliminates fretting corrosion.
Cons: Slightly higher initial cost, adds small amount of overhang.
Finished Bore (Plain Bore with Keyway):
Pros: Most compact and direct connection, lower cost for fixed installations.
Cons: Requires precise shaft machining, can be difficult to remove, may fret on the shaft over time.
Taper Lock is highly recommended for maintenance-friendly applications.
8. Can you produce sprockets with special features?
Yes. We can customize:
Special tooth profiles for specific chains.
Flanges, guards, or custom hubs.
Pilot bores, splines, or special keyways.
Special coatings (zinc, nickel, black oxide, Teflon-impregnated).
Marking with part numbers or logos.
9. Do you sell matching chains and other drive components?
Yes. We are a complete power transmission supplier. We can provide:
Roller Chains (standard, stainless, attachment).
V-Belts & Timing Belts/Pulleys.
Couplings, bearings, and shafts.
Complete drive kits.
10. What is your MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity)?
Standard Stock Sprockets: MOQ 10 pieces (often mixable within a series).
Custom Made-to-Order Sprockets: MOQ 50 pieces (negotiable based on size/complexity).
OEM/Large Project: MOQ negotiable.
11. What is your production lead time?
Standard Sprockets (from stock program): 7-10 working days.
Made-to-Order (standard specs): 15-25 working days.
Custom/OEM Designs: 25-35 working days after drawing approval.
