1. What is a Hex Bolt?
A Hex Bolt, also commonly called a Hex Head Bolt or Hex Cap Screw, is a threaded fastener with a six-sided (hexagonal) head. It is designed to be tightened or loosened with a wrench or socket. Hex bolts are one of the most versatile and widely used fasteners for assembling components through a pre-drilled hole, typically used with a nut or in a tapped hole.
2. What standards and grades do you produce?
We manufacture hex bolts to meet major international standards:
Metric (ISO/DIN): ISO 4014 (Full Thread), ISO 4017 (Partial Thread), with property classes 4.8, 8.8, 10.9, and 12.9.
Imperial (ANSI/ASME): ANSI B18.2.1, with grades Grade 2, Grade 5, Grade 8.
Stainless Steel: ISO 3506 / ASTM F593 with classes A2-70, A4-80, etc.
Other Standards: BS, JIS, GB standards are also available. We can produce to your specific standard requirement.
3. What materials are available?
We offer hex bolts in various materials to suit different environments and strength needs:
Carbon Steel: Most common. Grades range from low-carbon (e.g., 4.8) to medium/high-carbon alloy steel for higher grades (8.8, 10.9).
Stainless Steel: AISI 304 (A2) for general corrosion resistance, AISI 316 (A4) for superior corrosion resistance (marine, chemical).
Alloy Steel: For high-strength applications (e.g., 4140, 4340 for Grade 8 or 10.9/12.9 equivalents).
Brass, Silicon Bronze, Aluminum: For special electrical, marine, or non-magnetic applications.
4. What surface treatments or coatings do you offer?
Coatings provide corrosion protection and sometimes aesthetics:
Zinc Plating: Electro-galvanized (Blue/White/Yellow Zinc). Common, cost-effective. Yellow zinc offers better corrosion resistance.
Hot-Dip Galvanizing (HDG): Thick coating for heavy-duty outdoor corrosion protection (e.g., structural steel).
Geomet® (Zinc-Flake): Excellent corrosion resistance without hydrogen embrittlement risk. Common in automotive.
Black Oxide/Phosphate: Provides a black finish with mild corrosion resistance and reduces glare.
Dacromet/Xylan: For high-temperature or specialized corrosion resistance.
Plain/Self-Colored: For stainless steel or where no coating is required.
5. What sizes and dimensions do you cover?
We cover an extensive range:
Metric Thread Diameters: From M3 up to M64 and larger.
Imperial Thread Diameters: From #4 up to 2" and larger.
Lengths: From 10mm (or 1/2") up to 500mm (20") or longer custom lengths.
Thread Length: Can supply full thread or partial thread (with a defined non-threaded shank length).
Head Styles: Standard Hex Head, Heavy Hex (for structural applications per ASTM A325/A490), Hex Flange.
6. What is the difference between a Hex Bolt and a Hex Cap Screw?
In common usage, the terms are often interchangeable. However, technically:
Hex Cap Screw: Typically has a tighter dimensional tolerance, a chamfered end, and is designed to be used in tapped holes. It is generally of a higher grade (e.g., Grade 5/8 or 8.8/10.9).
Hex Bolt: May have a slightly looser tolerance, a flat or slightly chamfered end, and is commonly used with a nut.
In practice, we manufacture to precise specifications, so the intended use (with nut or in tapped hole) is more important than the name.
7. How do I specify the correct bolt for my application?
You need to determine:
Size: Diameter and Length (measured from under the head to the end).
Thread Pitch: Standard coarse thread (e.g., M10x1.5) or fine thread (e.g., M10x1.25). Coarse is most common.
Material & Grade: Based on required strength and environment.
Coating: Based on corrosion resistance needs.
Standard: The drawing or specification you are matching (ISO, ANSI, etc.).
8. What is the proof load and tensile strength?
These are key mechanical properties:
Tensile Strength: The maximum stress the bolt can withstand while being stretched before breaking (e.g., 800 MPa for 8.8).
Proof Load: The maximum tensile load the bolt must withstand without permanent deformation. It is typically 80-90% of the yield strength.
We provide mechanical property data sheets for each grade.
9. Can you customize bolts (OEM)?
Yes. We specialize in OEM manufacturing:
Non-standard lengths and diameters.
Special thread pitches or thread forms.
Custom head markings (logos, grade symbols).
Special materials and heat treatments.
Private label packaging.
10. What is your MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity)?
Standard Sizes/Grades: MOQ 1,000 kilograms (can be mixed across sizes within reason).
Special Grades/Sizes/Coatings: MOQ 500 kg per item.
Large Project/OEM: MOQ negotiable.
11. What is the production lead time?
Standard Items (in stock/regular production): 15-25 working days.
Custom/Special Items: 25-35 working days.
Very Large or Complex Orders: 40-50 working days.
